MATERNAL MORTALITY IN BANGLADESH (ongoing)

Problem: Bangladesh has a very high rate of maternal mortality.

Analysis: 3,450 women died from childbirth in 2023 in Bangladesh (115 per 100,000) compared to 60 in Australia (2 per 100,000) https://data.unicef.org/topic/maternal-health/maternal-mortality/

Solution: Health workers teach Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) to identify at-risk factors and act on complications. Health workers trained key TBAs to continue to educate other TBAs

Testing: Program not advanced enough for data

Result: In process.

LANGUAGE NEGATIVELY INFLUENCES ELDERLY HEALTH INTERVENTIONS - ongoing

Problem: Attitudes to elders in Western society have a negative effect on their lives, reinforced by use of words such as ‘fragile’. This affects their independence and care. Analysis:  Australian Human Rights Commission reported 83% of Australians believe that ageism is a problem. Ref https://humanrights.gov.au/our-work/age-discrimination/publications/whats-age-got-do-it-2021 Solution: Use substitute words, e.g., "seniors" and "super seniors," more respectful towards the elderly. Testing: Conduct  surveys of situations reflecting word choice of people's general state, based on the Zerfas Manual on Decision-Making. Result: Publicize results to influence decision-makers about proper approaches.
