COMMUNITY NUTRITION PROGRAM IN IRAQ 1998

Problem: High rate of malnutrition due to sanctions. 

Analysis: 9% of children under 5 years with low weight for age in 1991 rising to 23% in 1998.

Solution: Provide nationwide supplementary food and nutrition education through 1300 Community Child Care Units created by the Iraqi Government supported by UNICEF.

Testing: 650,000 children were assessed (1/3 of all children in the areas where CCUs were set up).

Result: 250,000 were identified as malnourished, and half of these were referred to the primary health centre.  View data

Problem: Attitudes to elders in Western society have a negative effect on their lives, reinforced by use of words such as ‘fragile’. This affects their independence and care. Analysis:  Australian Human Rights Commission reported 83% of Australians believe that ageism is a problem. Testing: Conduct  surveys of situations reflecting word choice of people's general state, based on the Zerfas Manual on Decision-Making. Result: Publicize results to influence decision-makers about proper approaches.

MATERNAL MORTALITY IN BANGLADESH (ongoing)

Problem: Bangladesh has a very high rate of maternal mortality. Analysis : 3,450 women died from childbirth in 2023 in Bangladesh (115 per 100,000) compared to 60 in Australia (2 per 100,000)  https://data.unicef.org/topic/maternal-health/maternal-mortality/ Solution : Health workers teach Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) to identify at-risk factors and act on complications.
